Media types sprawl around SPQR’s outdoor tables on sunny afternoons – it’s a long-lunching kind of place, where you could easily find yourself staying through until dinner. The wrought iron of the patio area is wreathed in ivy, while inside a murky twilight prevails throughout the day. It’s a dark, cavernous space; ideal for misbehaving in the corners. The lengthy menu of crisp-based pizzas, flavour-laden salads and pasta dishes, plenty of simple, well-cooked seafood and a range of platters catering for the drinking-and-nibbling crowd has changed little over the years. A bit of innovation probably wouldn’t go astray, but the regulars – and there are legions of them – are perfectly happy with the status quo. The service is exceptional, though it won’t be to everyone’s taste. Knowledgeable and friendly, it’s also theatrical and at times over the top. It’s all part of SPQR’s charm, but if you prefer not to be addressed as “dah-ling” you might want to give it a miss. However, for a fun, rowdy and potentially naughty night out, SPQR’s always a winner.
